A certified translation is a standard translation accompanied by the official stamp and signature of a permanent court interpreter. In Croatia, court interpreters are licensed by the Ministry of Justice, and their work is governed by national legislation as well as relevant international agreements.
These translations are used whenever documents must be legally recognised by public authorities, courts, institutions, or international bodies.
What is a certified translation?
A certified translation is not only about linguistic accuracy. It is a legally validated document that confirms that the translation corresponds fully to the original text.
In practice, it is issued and certified by a sworn court interpreter, who confirms its accuracy with an official stamp and signature.
This certification gives the translation legal validity for use in administrative and legal procedures in Croatia and abroad.
How does a certified translation look like?
Certified translations follow a defined structure regulated by law.
They typically include:
- a front page with official certification details
- the translated text
- the original document
- a final page containing the court interpreter’s official statement, licence details, and authorised language pairs
Each document is assigned an official reference number from the court interpreter’s register.
All pages are physically bound together, and the binding is secured with a ribbon, sticker, and official stamp. This ensures the document’s integrity and legal validity.
While it may appear ceremonial, this structure is what allows the translation to be accepted by institutions both in Croatia and internationally.
In certain cases, an additional authentication known as an Apostille may also be required, issued by competent authorities such as courts, ministries, or foreign affairs offices.
Which documents most commonly require a certified translation?
The list is longer than most people expect. Among the most frequent are:
Personal documents: birth certificates, marriage and divorce certificates, death certificates, passports and identity cards, diplomas and academic transcripts, driver's licences.
Legal and property documents: property deeds, court judgments, powers of attorney, contracts, company registration extracts.
Medical and administrative documents: medical records, police clearance certificates, pension documentation.
